The true story of eight Confederate “soldiers” who formed
the Reynolds gang and their nefarious activities in robbing Colorado of its gold during 1863-1864.
During the Civil War it was not unusual to find some Southern sympathizers migrating to the Colorado
Territory. There they formed militia groups with base camps in mountain
hideaways, such as Mace’s Hole, now Beulah, Colorado. Their
mission was to terrorize ranchers, rob stagecoaches and banks and cause general
havoc while seeking gold to bolster the Confederate Government.
Among them, though less regimented and disciplined than other similar groups from the South, was the Reynolds gang, bushwhackers or
Confederate guerrillas, who displayed their wrath against the union in a way that
caused them to be constantly on the run from sheriff posses.
The Reynolds gang was unsuccessful in their endeavors, but one of the gang members managed to literally lose his head in doing so.
